Unveiling of Evergreen's New Sculpture
Brother Joseph Aspell's inspirational masterpiece marks parish's tenth anniversary

A magnificent bronze sculpture will be unveiled at St. Francis of Assisi Parish on May 30, marking this Catholic community's tenth anniversary.  The statue, an image of St. Francis stretching forth a hand of mercy to a leper, stands more than 9 feet tall and will rest upon a a 5-foot pedestal atop a set of steps overlooking the Evergreen Valley.

The breathtaking interpretation of St. Francis is the creation of Bay Area artist Joseph Aspell, a Marianist Brother who was born and raised in San Francisco.  The works of Brother Joseph, who attended the San Francisco Academy of Art, have been recognized both regionally and nationally for more than two decades.

According to Monsignor John Sandersfeld, the historic event and celebration will mark the completion of the first phase of his parish's development.  "Over a short time, the parish has accomplished more than ever thought possible," says Sandersfeld.  parishioners of St. Francis of Assisi have developed 10 communities of faith over the past decade and through them have served the people of Evergreen.  Celebrations continue in the many languages of Evergreen, including English, Spanish Filipino and Vietnamese.

Since its inception, St. Francis of Assisi Church has focused on the community outside itself.  Sandersfeld explains that in the spirit of St. Francis, who devote d his life to helping the less fortunate, "parishioners have provided labor to build and improve neighborhoods, held clothing and food drives, organized senior and youth services, participated in meal programs and offered a unified voice to speak on behalf of the needy."

Monsignor Sandersfeld says it is his hope that the public will join in the unveiling and celebration.  "As we unveil the image of Francis, we will pause to acknowledge the challenge it brings to each of us as we now face the next 10 years of community and service to the people of Evergreen and San Jose," he adds.

The unveiling will take place on Friday, May 30, 2003 at 6:30pm at 5111 San Felipe Road, San Jose 95135.
