REQUIREMENTS FOR CONFIRMATION CANDIDATES

Download in pdf

The Confirmation Program is open to high school age students in the 9th, 10th, 11th & 12th grades.  Commitment to come to the program does not mean you are committing to receive the sacrament.  However, at the time of the Rite of Confirmation, the candidates should freely desire the sacrament and freely commit themselves to following in the life of Christ and become actively involved in the Church.

A candidate must have been baptized.  A photocopy of the candidate’s baptismal certificate will be required to complete registration.  If the candidate has not received First Eucharist, they will be prepared to receive that Sacrament while they are preparing for Confirmation  (four additional sessions will be required for First Eucharist preparation).

The family of the candidate must be registered at the parish and participating members of a parish Ecclesial Community.

A candidate must register for the Confirmation program when it begins.  Generally, students will not be added late to the program.

Attendance at the Homegroup sessions is extremely important.  Missed classes must be made up (by arrangement with the Coordinator).  After the second missed session, the Candidate will be asked to leave the program and re-register the following year.

A Candidate must choose a sponsor.  The sponsor must be a fully initiated, practicing Catholic who is at least sixteen years of age.  The sponsor should not be a parent.  We urge the Candidate to choose someone who lives close by so he or she can participation the program as necessary and lend spiritual support to the Candidate in the coming years.  The Candidate is encouraged to give thought to whom they would like to ask to be their sponsor.  The sponsor will need to complete a Sponsor eligibility form and have it returned to the parish by the dealine.

A Candidate is encouraged to be involved in Christian service to the community.  Opportunities for service will be made available for the Candidates (and their families if desired) to participate in if they are not already doing so.

A Candidate must be interviewed by a member of the Pastoral Staff and/or Youth Leadership Team to determine his or her preparedness for the Sacraments and understanding of God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, the Scriptures and the Sacraments.  Interviews will be scheduled in the spring.

A Candidate may choose a confirmation name.  Candidates may use their baptismal name or can choose the name of a canonized saint.

A Candidate must attend the Confirmation Retreat, which will be scheduled for the Spring.

A Candidate is expected to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation before the reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation.  An opportunity will be made available for individual confessions at the retreat.

A candidate must attend the rehearsal for the Confirmation ceremony.

Parents and Sponsors (or a proxy) must participate in all sessions designated for them.

A Candidate must wear appropriate dress, not use profane or abusive language and be willing to share and participate fully in all activities for the faith formation and above all conduct themselves in a Christian manner.

A Candidate must be an active and practicing Catholic.  They should be entering into preparation and receive the Sacrament willing.  We encourage the entire family to attend mass and receive Eucharist regularly.
