First Sacraments Brochure

Here's how it works.  In the first year, register your family for our catechetical program, Generations of Faith.  This is Option 1.  In the Second Year of preparation, enroll in both Generations of Faith and Sacrament Preparation (First Eucharist/Reconciliation). This is Option 2A for 2nd-3rd graders or Option 2B for 4th-8th graders.

Enrollment is open until the end of August for First Eucharist preparation.  Check the appropriate boxes on your Generations of Faith (GOF) application See goals.

Enrollment is open to:
Children in 2nd or 3rd grade who have completed a full year of Generations of Faith (GOF) and children in grades 4 – 8 who have completed a full year of Generations of Faith.

Families can choose from two options, depending on the ages and needs of their children:

Option 1
First Eucharist/Reconciliation Year I-For 1st-7th graders.

The first year of sacrament preparation involves the participation in the 9 sessions of our catechetical program, Generations of Faith.

Option 2A
First Eucharist/Reconciliation Year II- For 2nd-3rd graders.

Special Note: 2/20/08:
Option 2A-(2nd & 3rd graders)   The final workshop is THIS TUESDAY at 6:30pm.  Sign ups for interviews and 1st Eucharist mass choices will happen at this meeting. I will explain this further at the workshop on Feb. 26th.
Option 2B/3- (4th-8th graders and children’s initiation) We meet this Monday (tomorrow).  I will explain further at our meeting tomorrow.

This process is designed for children in grades 2-3. Families prepare their children for Eucharist and Reconciliation in their homes.

Support meetings are held for parents. There they receive guidance in using the children’s workbooks. While the parents are meeting, the children attend workshops focused on the sacraments.  Children in Grades 2-3 must have completed at least one year of Generations of Faith (our catechetical program) to enroll in First Eucharist and must be enrolled in Generations of Faith during their year of preparation.

First Reconciliation is celebrated communally early in the process.

First Eucharist  is celebrated with  the family’s Ecclesial Community during the Easter season (after Easter Sunday). The fee for the second year sacramental preparation per child is $50. That is in addition to the $90 Generations of Faith family fee.  Bring a copy of your child’s Baptismal certificate when you sign up.

Option 2B
First Eucharist/Reconciliation Year II (Older Children) - For 4th-8th graders

Children in grades 4 – 8 must have completed at least one year of Generations of Faith (our catechetical program) to enroll in First Eucharist and must be enrolled in Generations of Faith during their year of preparation.

Since families are an integral part of the process, parents come to  a series of 8 preparation meetings in the Fall.

The children’s portion of the preparation for their sacraments (their second year) is at 12 meetings held in the Spring.

Reconciliation is  celebrated communally  during this time.

First Eucharist is celebrated with the family’s Ecclesial Community during the  Easter season which is after Easter Sunday.

Option 3
Children's Initiation - Baptism for Older Children

Unbaptized children over the age of seven (7) are invited to a special time of preparation for full initiation in the church, which leads to Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation.

First Eucharist and Reconciliation – Teens
This program prepares high school students for the celebration of the sacrament of First Eucharist and Reconciliation. It occurs at the same time as the preparation for Confirmation but involves additional preparation sessions. Course of preparation depends in part on the individual. There is $40 fee for this program in addition to the Confirmation fee.

Confirmation – Teens

This program prepares high school students for the celebration of the sacrament of confirmation. A person must be in high school (or entering in Fall 2005) to register for this program. The program consists of group meetings at the Church on the first and second Tuesday nights of the month from 7:00-8:15 PM, and participation in Generations of Faith on the third Tuesday of the month, and occasional meetings on the fourth Tuesday. Basically the teens meet 4 times a month from mid-September through May. There is also a one day retreat in September and a three day overnight retreat in March. The cost is $50 per student for the program, $40 for Generations of Faith and $125 for the overnight retreat-payable at that time. Space in the program is limited and priority is given to current active parish members.  Download current brochure and See 2006-2007 Calendar

Youth Mass is celebrated every Sunday at 6 p.m.  Attendance at Youth Mass is expected of all Confirmation candidates.

Posted 11/4/07: We have 66 candidates preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation this year. We also have 27 teens and adults on the Confirmation team this year. The majority of the leaders are recent Confirmandi returning to help facilitate this year’s Home Groups. Sacramental Prep for Adults
Call the parish office at 223-1562.

RCIA
A process for welcoming adult inquirers into the Catholic Church. It is designed to meet the needs of those who are:

  • not baptized

  • baptized in another faith, but want instruction and initiation into the Catholic faith

  • baptized Catholics, but have little or no Catholic teaching, and have not received the sacraments of Eucharist or Confirmation.

Interested persons may join at any time.

We’ve started a new RCIA inquiry group on Thursday evenings from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM. If you answer “yes” to any of the following questions, the RCIA process is for you. Entering the RCIA process is NOT a commitment to join the Catholic Church, but is an introduction to our faith.

Adult Confirmation
A process for preparing adults to receive only the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Posted 11/4/07: If you are a baptized Catholic who has never been confirmed we will be having monthly gatherings to begin the journey to celebrating Confirmation. This will be an opportunity to reflect on our Catholic faith, ask questions of it, challenge it and discern our readiness for Confirmation.  It promises to be a safe and engaging place.  We will meet on Wednesdays at 6pm and for those who care to join us we will then attend Lytehouse our young adult group.  Our first meeting will be November 7.  If you are interested, please call Glenn Valois  408-223-1562 x316 or email him at gvalois@sfoasj.org.

Posted 12/30/07: We have started to meet for adult confirmation. We have an great group of young adults attending our sessions. We meet the first Wednesday of each month for about 45-50 minutes to share our stories and then we transition into Lytehouse (our young adult group) for incredible music for praise, worship, and to feed our spirit.  If you are interested in signing up there is still time, please contact Glenn Valois at: 408-223-1759 gvalois@sfoasj.org.

Marriage
Preparations should begin at least six (6) months prior to your wedding date.  Call the office 223-1562 for an appointment.

Our Marriage Validation Program assists couples, who for one reason or another have not had their marriage solemnized in the Catholic Church, complete their requirements for the validation of their marriage. If you know someone has not been able to have their marriage performed by a Catholic priest, our parish is sponsoring a program that will assist you in taking care of this matter. Please call the office for more information and to register.

Here Are Some Numbers
Did you know that this year 90 children received First Eucharist as well as their first Reconciliation? Six (6) children ages 8-13 were fully initiated at Easter Vigil (baptized, confirmed and received First Communion).    Presently, 12 unbaptized children ages 7-14 are beginning to learn about our Faith.
