Faithful Citizenship (posted 10/26/08)
It must be noted that a well-formed Christian conscience does not permit one to vote for a political program or an individual law which contradicts the fundamental content of faith and morals. The Christian faith is an integral unity, and thus it is incoherent to isolate some particular element to the detriment of the whole of Catholic doctrine. A political commitment to a single isolated aspect of the Church's social doctrine does not exhaust one's responsibility to the common good. The Campaign to Reduce Poverty
The Campaign to Reduce Poverty is a national effort led by Catholic Charities USA to cut the poverty rate in the United States by 50% by the year 2020. Catholic Charities USA promotes this effort on a national level, advocating for national legislative action promoting the reduction of poverty, and locally, Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County participates in the campaign. The St. Francis of Assisi Social Justice team encourages all parishioners to support the campaign. Please look for announcements and details regarding the campaign in the future and how all of us can help reduce poverty in the United States.

If you have any questions regarding the Campaign, please contact Marcos Herrera @ 239-9835.

Faithful Citizenship

Every four years, prior to the national elections, the US Bishops publish a statement titled, Faithful Citizenship. This year's statement addresses the Challenge of Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship.

The Bishops counsel us as Catholics that our participation in the voting process helps shapes "the moral character of society ... and is a moral requirement of our faith, a part of the mission given to us by Jesus Christ." T

he overall goal of the Bishops is to help us form our consciences consistent with Church teaching and tradition so that we will make sound moral choices.
